Visit Ouessant - Ecomuseum

Niou Huella Eco-Museum

The Niou Huella Ecomuseum on Ouessant, which holds the ‘Musée de France’ accreditation, invites you to discover how life was organised on the island of Ouessant up until the mid-20th century. Furniture, everyday objects, tools, traditional costumes and more make up the collection, which has been gathered with the help of the local community and is displayed in the two houses:

A preserved traditional island dwelling, with its brightly coloured interior decorated like a sanctuary, the haystack adorned with straw braids, and the enclosures of dry stone walls where Ouessant sheep (a small local breed) graze.

The house-museum, which tells the story of daily island life on this piece of land isolated from the mainland where, whilst the men were away on long-distance voyages, the women alone took care of the farm work and ensured the family’s survival.
