1. General Conditions of Carriage for Passengers
1.1 THE CARRIER’S LIABILITY
Passenger transport is subject to the provisions of European Regulation No 1177/2010 of 24 November 2010 concerning the rights of passengers travelling by sea or inland waterway.
During embarkation, disembarkation and crossings, the Company’s liability is limited in all circumstances to the period during which passengers or their property are under its direct control on board its vessels or on its premises, excluding all facilities and structures in the public domain.
Compagnie Maritime Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed shall not be held liable in the event of changes to timetables or the cancellation of sailings due to force majeure, including adverse weather conditions, or extraordinary circumstances preventing the provision of transport services, as defined by European Regulation No 1177/2010 of 24 November2010.
The duration of the crossings is provided for information purposes only, excluding stopover times, and may vary significantly depending on the vessel and weather conditions.
In the event of a delay, the airline undertakes to inform passengers as soon as possible.
1.2 BOARDING AND SECURITY CHECKS
To board the train, all passengers, including children and those travelling free of charge, must be in possession of a valid ticket. In the event of an on-board ticket inspection, any passenger holding a reduced-fare ticket must be able to present their personal identification (ID), as photocopies are not accepted. If no valid proof of identity is provided, the passenger will be required to pay the full fare.
1.3 HAND LUGGAGE, GOODS AND VEHICLES
Hand luggage is a way of carrying personal belongings. It can be a bag (such as a travel bag or rucksack), a suitcase, or a package fitted with a handle. It must be easy to handle.
Crates, trunks, parcels, boxes, items and shopping bags are not considered to be luggage. They are goods subject to specific charges and transport conditions (see 3. General Conditions of Carriage for Goods).
Two items of hand luggage per person are permitted. Passengers may keep these with them during the voyage or may place them in the designated storage areas (depending on the vessel). Hand luggage is carried at the passenger’s own risk and responsibility.
The baggage allowance is limited to 20 kg per adult passenger and 10 kg per child passenger. All baggage, including hand luggage covered by the allowance, must be weighed. Baggage other than ‘hand luggage’ is placed in a container and carried in the hold (depending on the vessel). The ships’ carrying capacity is limited. Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed may be required to transfer luggage to another ship or journey if the ship’s maximum carrying capacity is reached or for any other safety-related reason. The carriage of vehicles is subject to specific conditions (see 3. General Conditions of Carriage of Goods).
Luggage must be labelled with the owner’s name and address. Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed Shipping Company accepts no liability for any loss, damage of any kind, or costs incurred as a result of the Passenger’s failure to comply with this rule. It reserves the right to refuse any luggage that is not properly packed, labelled or shows visible signs of damage. Passengers are responsible for stowing their luggage on board or in the containers provided for this purpose. They must ensure that their luggage does not block emergency exits or access for safety crew members, and must ensure that its positioning does not present a hazard. Under no circumstances must luggage be placed on passenger seats.
Passengers remain responsible for their luggage and personal belongings throughout the crossing. Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed Shipping Company accepts no liability for theft, disappearance, loss or damage to such luggage or personal belongings, whether they are stored in containers or on board its vessels. Furthermore, Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed is not liable for any loss, damage of any kind or costs associated with luggage or other personal belongings left on its premises or on board its vessels.
1.4 TRANSPORT OF BICYCLES, ELECTRIC BICYCLES AND ELECTRIC SCOOTERS
Bicycles, bicycle trailers, cargo bikes and scooters are not considered hand luggage and are subject to a specific transport charge.
BICYCLES, BIKE TRAILERS & CARGO BIKES Bicycles
cannot be transported on all ships. Please enquire when booking.
Bicycles are transported in containers specifically designed for this purpose. Each bicycle must be clearly labelled with a destination label provided by the Company. Passengers are required to go to the ferry terminal before departure to collect the destination label and attach it to their bicycle. Any bicycle not labelled in accordance with the Company’s instructions may be refused boarding. The Company accepts no liability for loss or misrouting if this procedure is not followed.
Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed accepts no liability for any damage or loss sustained by bicycles being transported, for whatever reason.
SCOOTERS Electric
scooters must be taken on board with the passenger. They may not be transported in separate containers. The passenger is responsible for their scooter throughout the crossing and must ensure that it is stowed securely.
Passengers carrying electric scooters must, where possible, remove the battery from the device before boarding. The battery must be placed in a suitable bag and kept by the passenger for the duration of the crossing. This measure is designed to ensure safety on board and to prevent any risks associated with lithium-ion batteries. The Company reserves the right to refuse boarding of any scooter or battery that does not comply with these conditions of carriage.
Island rate
A special “Island Resident” fare is available for the carriage of bicycles, scooters, cargo bikes and tandems. This fare is strictly reserved for holders of a valid island resident card issued by the relevant authorities. Presentation of this card may be required at the time of booking, boarding or during checks on board. To qualify for this fare, the holder of the islander card must travel on the same vessel as the bicycle, scooter, cargo bike or tandem being transported. No transport of equipment alone will be permitted under the islander fare.
If the cardholder is not present when the equipment is transported, or if a valid islander’s card is not presented, the full standard fare will automatically apply, with no entitlement to a refund or compensation.
1.5 TRANSPORT OF PETS
Pets travel under the responsibility of their owner once a ticket has been purchased. Small dogs, cats and other small animals that can be placed in a carrier or basket will travel free of charge, provided they are accompanied by their owner or a person responsible for them. Guide dogs for the blind or visually impaired and assistance dogs will travel free of charge with their owners. Other pet dogs are subject to a fare. They must be kept on a lead at all times and must wear a suitable muzzle. Category 1 and 2 dogs weighing less than 6kg must also wear a suitable muzzle. Dogs are not permitted to sit on seats.
PLEASE NOTE: The conditions for travelling with hunting dogs are set out in the specific section on animals. Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed reserves the right to refuse boarding to any animal whose behaviour could pose a risk to passengers. Admission on board does not relieve the passenger responsible for the animal of liability in the event of an attack or damage of any kind caused by the animal.
1.6 COACH TRANSPORT
The Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed shipping company may, for technical reasons, arrange for passengers to be transferred by coach on the Brest–Le Conquet or Le Conquet–Brest route, at its own expense.
As services to the island of Sein may, due to weather conditions, be operated from the port of Douarnenez, the Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed shipping company may need to arrange, at its own expense, coach transport for passengers between Douarnenez and Audierne-Esquibien.
1.7 PEOPLE WITH REDUCED MOBILITY
Some vessels have been specially adapted to ensure transport in the safest possible conditions (designated seating areas, a call button to alert the crew in the event of a problem, and a wheelchair-securing system).
The cabin crew have also undergone additional training to improve the quality of care they provide.
Where possible, to make boarding and the crossing easier for passengers with severely reduced mobility, it is best to provide this information when booking the crossing.
During the high season, boarding at Ouessant is not possible at the old quay for passengers in wheelchairs or those who are unable to use the stairs. This applies to the 4 pm departures every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday.
Crossings on the Tricard and the Pétrel are not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
For bookings by passengers using electric wheelchairs: electric wheelchairs can only be accepted under the following conditions: The electric wheelchair must be capable of being lifted by a crane.
The passenger may either move around without their wheelchair, or transfer to a manual wheelchair provided by the airline for the duration of the journey without assistance.

sixth month of pregnancy onwards, pregnant women must carry a medical certificate authorising them to travel. The medical certificate must be presented upon request by the shipping company’s staff.

These services are in addition to the snacks, meals or refreshments provided for in the Regulation.
The company limits the total cost of onshore accommodation to €80 per passenger per night, for a maximum of three nights, excluding transport between the terminal and the accommodation.
In the event of a delay on arrival at the final destination, passengers may, without forfeiting their right to carriage, claim compensation amounting to at least 25% of the ticket price, depending on the length of the delay:
- at least 1 hour for a journey expected to last ≤ 4 hours;
- at least 2 hours for a journey expected to last between 4 and 8 hours;
- at least 3 hours for a journey expected to last between 8 and 24 hours;
- at least 6 hours for a journey expected to last more than 24 hours.
If the delay exceeds twice the times specified above, compensation amounts to 50% of the ticket price.
The provisions regarding accommodation and compensation do not apply where the carrier proves that the cancellation or delay is due to:
- weather conditions that jeopardise the safe operation of the vessel; or
extraordinary circumstances preventing the provision of the transport service, which could not have been avoided even if all reasonable measures had been taken. By way of exception, passengers holding an islander’s card will be reimbursed up to €80 per night for accommodation and meal costs, including in the event of cancellation due to weather conditions.

Goods must be packed or packaged to protect them from the risks of sea transport.
The packaging must be strong enough to withstand handling at ports, pressure in the hold, the ship’s movements at sea, unloading, and the duration of the voyage…
The goods must be properly labelled or marked.
Unlabelled parcels will not be loaded into containers or shipped.
Goods and hand luggage to be carried on the same day must be handed in and checked in no later than 45 minutes before departure. There is no guarantee that parcels and luggage handed in less than 30 minutes before departure will be carried on the same day.
The pallets must allow for the containers to be filled to an acceptable standard (internal dimensions: H = 1.60 m, L = 1.90 m, W = 1.35 m). If this is not the case, individual packages may be unpacked for stowage in the container (depending on the vessel).
GENERAL
CARGO No goods may be delivered directly on board ships. Goods must be received and registered at the ferry terminal during opening hours. The Company shall not be liable for any damage or loss suffered by goods deposited outside the warehouse’s opening hours. Charges are calculated by weight or volume in accordance with the Company’s rates. Port charges are payable at departure or at destination.
GOODS REQUIRING CONTROLLED TEMPERATURE Fresh
or frozen products delivered at a temperature that does not comply with the requirements will be refused by the Company. Frozen goods must be delivered in insulated packaging capable of maintaining the required temperatures throughout the entire sea transport journey.
DANGEROUS GOODS The following items
, among others, are classified as dangerous in everyday products:
- Flammable substances: petrol, white spirit… and items containing them (engines…), etc.
- Explosive materials:
- Aerosol
- Pressurised capacity (oxygen, acetylene, butane, propane)
- Pyrotechnics (fireworks, firecrackers), etc.
- Acids.
Goods consisting of flammable, explosive or dangerous materials, the carriage of which the carrier or its agent would not have agreed to had they been aware of their nature, may at any time and in any place be unloaded, destroyed or rendered harmless by the carrier, without compensation. The shipper shall also be liable for any damage and expenses that may result from their carriage. Such goods may not be carried on mixed-use vessels (passenger/cargo). We draw carriers’ attention to the danger of including such products in mixed pallets.
All deliveries of dangerous goods must be declared in advance to the Goods Department (02 98 80 81 60 [email protected]). No goods will be stored on site. Deliveries that have not been authorised in advance will be refused.
DANGEROUS ITEMS: Weapons of
any kind are considered dangerous items. Passengers in possession of such items are requested to inform a member of the crew so that arrangements can be made for their transport in the hold or any other suitable area. Furthermore, the crew is authorised to intervene, both on boarding and during the crossing, to take all necessary measures to ensure these items are transported under conditions that are safe for passengers.
LIVE ANIMALS:
The Company undertakes, when transporting live animals, to prioritise respect for animal welfare in accordance with REGULATION (EC) No 1/2005 OF THE COUNCIL of 22 December 2004 on the protection of animals during transport and related operations and amending Directives 64/432/EEC and 93/119/EC and Regulation (EC) No 1255/97. Please contact our freight department to discuss the arrangements for such transport.
INSURANCE:
The goods are insured against standard transport risks.
The carrier’s liability is governed by Articles L5422-12 to L5422-18 of the Transport Code and is limited to 666.67 SDRs (€1.24 as at 1 January 2022) per parcel or 2 SDRs per kilogram of lost or damaged goods, whichever is the more favourable.
Taking out ad valorem insurance allows you to raise the limit of this statutory liability cap.
DAMAGE OR MISSING ITEMS:
Any loss or damage to the goods being transported must be reported at the time of receipt in the case of visible damage, or within three days of receipt in the case of hidden damage. An inspection may be carried out.
The carrier shall not be liable for any damage to or loss of the goods resulting from circumstances beyond its control and constituting force majeure, in particular:
- Inherent defect in the goods
- Errors on the part of the shipper, particularly in relation to the packing, packaging or labelling of the goods
- Fire
- Assistance to a marine vessel.
CAR TRANSPORT:
Ouessant: the vehicle must remain on the island for at least two consecutive months. Molène: the transport of vehicles is subject to prior approval from the Town Hall.
Optional insurance is offered when the vehicle is registered. If this is not taken out, compensation payable in the event of damage will be limited to the liability limit.
Vehicles must be roadworthy and capable of being positioned under the crane without external assistance.
Vehicles must be dropped off at the ferry terminal on the day of transport and collected upon arrival at the destination. Please note that the ferry operator’s liability begins the moment the vehicle is at the quay, alongside the ship, ready to be loaded. Consequently, any drop-off of the vehicle prior to its transport date, which would result in the vehicle being parked in the vicinity of the ferry terminal whilst awaiting boarding, is a courtesy service provided by the carrier to its customers. It is therefore understood that, for the entire duration of parking prior to the vehicle being hoisted, the vehicle remains the sole responsibility of the customer; the carrier cannot be held liable for any damage caused to the vehicle prior to loading operations, nor for any consequential losses.
STORAGE:
Goods must be collected as soon as they arrive at their destination. Otherwise, a storage charge will be levied from the fourth day of storage.
INVOICING: Accounting
entries relating to the transport of goods and property are invoiced at the end of the month and are payable by the 30th of the following month. Failure to pay within this period will result in interest being charged at the statutory rate in force, plus 2 percentage points as at the date of invoicing, for each day of delay. Any dispute regarding the amounts invoiced must be raised no later than 1 (one) month from the date of receipt of the invoice. The company undertakes to respond and to provide a solution, if the claim is justified, within one month of the buyer’s claim.
Monthly invoicing for transport services is available to business customers once an account has been opened and direct debit payments have been set up. In the event of a payment issue, the account will be suspended until the matter is resolved, and freight charges will be payable for each transport service.

Any passenger using a ticket issued at a reduced fare or a season ticket must be able to provide proof of their eligibility and identity upon request by the Operator’s authorised staff. If the passenger is unable to provide such proof immediately, they will be deemed to have committed an offence and will be liable to criminal or regulatory penalties.
Passengers who breach the provisions of Articles 1 and 2 will be in breach of the terms and conditions. Such breaches may be detected at any time on the shipping company’s BreizhGo network by inspection staff authorised by the Operator.
Season tickets and island cards are personalised documents bearing the holder’s surname, first name and photograph. They are strictly personal and non-transferable, and remain the property of Compagnie Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed; in the case of island cards, they remain the property of the Regional Council of Brittany.
Consequently, any fraudulent use of the season ticket, island pass or discount card by the cardholder, whether as the perpetrator or an accomplice to fraud (forgery, counterfeiting, lending to a third party, etc.) discovered during an inspection may result in the holder being denied access to the vessel and the immediate withdrawal of the card by any member of Compagnie Breizhgo Penn Ar Bed staff, as well as potential legal proceedings. In the event of fraud involving an islander’s card, the card may be suspended for up to six months in coordination with the services of the Regional Council of Brittany.
The Carrier may also terminate the travel card automatically, by giving notice to the Passenger, in the event of proven or repeated fraud, or non-payment.
Any request for a replacement membership card, school card or island card will be charged at the current rate.
