Visit Molène

Molène: The Iroise paradise island

The highest point on Molène is 26 metres above sea level. In the past, the harvesting of seaweed from Europe’s largest seaweed bed earned it the nickname the “Archipelago of the Seaweed Harvesters”.

This 21,400-hectare reserve lies within the boundaries of the Armorique Regional Nature Park. It ensures the protection of certain fragile habitats against potential overexploitation of resources or excessive summer tourist numbers. During your crossing, you may have the chance to spot dolphins as well as the grey seals that are a familiar sight in the archipelago’s turquoise waters. It is the perfect stopover for a nature-filled break in Finistère.

In Molène, you can visit the semaphore station, as well as Saint-Ronan’s Church, the Island Environment Centre and the Monks’ Mill.

The memory of the Drummond-Castle, a British passenger ship that sank in June 1896, lives on on the island in the form of a freshwater cistern, a museum and the church clock.

Near the landing stage, the orientation board helps you locate the main islands of the archipelago: Lédénez, Balanec, Bannec and Triélen, offering a magnificent view of the Iroise Sea.

Molène is an island best explored on foot; scooters and bicycles are not permitted.

If you’d like to have lunch on the island, do remember to book your restaurant in advance.
