Stiff Lighthouse

The first lighthouse built on the island… The Stiff Lighthouse. One of the oldest lighthouses in France still in operation, the Stiff Lighthouse was built on the island’s highest point (60 m). Following a visit in August 1685, Vauban proposed the construction of a defensive tower to warn of dangers in the north-west of Brest.

Built in 1695 and lit in 1700, it initially ran on coal, then switched to oil in 1889. At the start of the 20th century, it was fitted with a new optical system.

It stands approximately 33 m high (90 m above sea level). Today, it is automated and remotely controlled from Créac’h. Its light consists of two red flashes every 20 seconds. Its range is 24 miles.
