The island of Ouessant, with its rugged coastline and white pebble beaches, boasts 32 km of coastline that hikers can explore on foot over a weekend. Situated at the westernmost tip of Finistère, the island of Ouessant offers a unique, varied and protected landscape. The vegetation is sparse and the shrubs are shaped by the wind.
An island waiting to be discovered
On the south coast, heather and gorse create a magnificent landscape. A few trees nevertheless thrive in the sheltered Arland valley. The mild climate encourages camellias, fuchsias, agaves, aloes and agapanthus to bloom in the gardens; one can also revel in the scent of heather and admire the dance of the black bees as they produce an exquisite honey found nowhere else…
Ouessant is a prime location in Brittany for many species of birds. That is why the island is home to the Centre d’étude du Milieu d’Ouessant (CEMO). The breathtaking spectacle of birds in their natural habitat is sure to delight birdwatchers.
The traditions of Ouessant also make it a unique place. In the past, the men would join the navy and the women had to manage daily life on their own on an island made up of tiny plots of land.
As farmers and builders, they grew rye and barley, and reared horses, cows and, above all, sheep. They repaired the roofs of houses and the low stone walls, and gravelled the paths. It is not for nothing that Ouessant is known as the ‘Island of Women’.
Let yourself be enchanted by this unspoilt island!
